The Casa

The Casa da Imagem (CI) [House of Image] is a cultural center for practice and artistic education devoted to image research. It is designed to develop as an exhibition and experimental space and a space for researching, training and learning in the fields of art and education that works as a bridge between art and the community

Intends to be a place where people can learn, reflect, generate and share perspectives concerning the relationship between the individual and the world through image.

In the CI, the experimentation of artistic practice allows configuring hybrid contexts in which the image is found.
We would like the CI to be a space where learning is characterized by its ability to intervene reflectively on everyday contexts and we believe that we can achieve that by including participants in the activities. We understand education as an activity that focuses on the knowledge that the individual builds up within himself in connection to his environment.
The artistic education in the CI centers on the close relationship between experience, artistic and cultural promotion and the educational service.

We encourage people to explore the relationship between the artistic and the educational standpoints in terms of their own experiences and expectations. It is in this environment of learning and crafting that it becomes possible for contemporary art to create a common ground, where multiple spheres of meaning with different points of reference intersect: everything from communication and language to the historical, social, philosophical, aesthetical, political and educational dimensions. Learning takes place when we adopt an attitude of discovery, of exploration and deconstruction, of cooperation, of creating and sharing individual perceptions about images.

OUR VISION

To build a place for learning and sharing experiences where the notion of image will present itself as the ground upon which our way of doing things can meet our need to affirm ourselves as persons and our relationship with others and with the world around us.

FOR WHOM?

The CI is open to the community. The activities involve the development of entertaining and exploratory techniques and artistic practices and they are aimed at a vast audience: everyone from preschool children to senior citizens. We also invest in training and specific activities for professionals within the artistic and education fields.

WHAT KIND OF ACTIVITIES?

Workshop related activities: we offer seasonal and annual activities. Organized by professionals from different backgrounds, these activities involve sharing and constant experimentation and discovery of means and technologies. This allows the participants to create objects/actions without fixed goals or any impositions regarding methodology, thus making way for personal discoveries. Training activities: aimed at Visual Art teachers, these are organized as part of continuing training programmes.
Artistic experience: the gallery will work as a meeting point for artistic production and experience. During exhibitions we will pay special attention to the working processes.
Activities for a specialized audience within the artistic and education fields: we will organize workshops, meetings and conferences.

HOW DOES THE DYNAMIC AT CI WORK?

Every line of activity will have its own time, space, intervenients and working processes.
It is essential that the different lines of activity find points of intersection. That will allow artistic and educational practices to influence each other.
